The POSSE. What is it? What does it mean? Why are students all over the country claiming to be proud members of it? POSSE is an acronym (be Positive, be Open, be Sincere, have Spirit, and don't be Exclusive) that gives students a way of thinking and behaving that will allow them to make their school, community, organization, etc. a better place.

I have spent most of my life helping students realize the influence they have upon their peers, and understand that by using that influence in a positive way they can make a difference every day. Students have the ability to approach as well as to react to situations in a positive manner. I challenge them to have the courage to be open to new ideas, thoughts, events, and people. I show them that when they treat all people with sincerity and encourage the talents and spirit of others great things can happen. I also encourage students to not be exclusive. With the "dog eat dog" mentality in schools today, the idea of being all inclusive is radical to some youth. I teach them by including others in everything they do students can change the whole atmosphere of their surroundings. It is these ideas that I impress upon students when I invite them to be in The POSSE!
